Fall Favorite — Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’

I walk past my Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ every day and it never ceases to amaze me… Today, November 4th (yes, as in “NOVEMBER”, the month after Halloween), the shrub was flowering and fruiting at the same time. I also saw it visited by a hummingbird earlier in the day and now I am watching a lone bumblebee and a few honey bees try to find a little nectar in its flowers. What a spectacular plant!

It maintains a dwarf habit of about 5-6′ without pruning. This one has been installed more than 8 years and is just about 6′ tall. It is evergreen and has a nice layering branching habit with bold evergreen leaves and reddish-brown interesting stems.

Can you tell I am a fan? If you are looking for a plant that performs all year long and even looks great in the winter, this plant is one to consider and is on our “almost-every-landscape” plant list. 🙂
